Alu- vs. raudploki mass
Saabus küsimus meilitsi:

What are the differences between a aluminum small block v8 and iron small
block v8. In weight?

Kui kellelgi on käepärast ntx LS1 ja LT1 massi, siis oleks ehk hea võrrelda.

Of course this has a lot to do with the application and the design of the block. I think the block weight of a typical iron SB is around 50-80 kg depending on the brand. An aluminum block weights about 1/2-2/3 of that. Aluminum blocks tend to be more heavy duty than production iron blocks, they still have iron cylinder sleves and usually main caps too which add weight. Aluminum is not as stiff as iron and therefore aluminum block engines tend to produce less power than a similar iron block engine. Therefore for example in Pro Stock they use iron blocks instead of aluminum. The 'gains' with aluminum is the weight and the fact that they are repairable even after major failures. The drawback is of course the price; they are at least 1.5 times more expensive than a race iron block, roughly in the 4-5000$ range. A complete BB Mopar with aluminum heads and block, headers, water oil & accessories weighs 220 kg which is clearly less than the weight of an iron SB chevy.

Holdenitel vist samad plokid kasutusel. Nende lehe andmetel olevat LS1 c.a. 48% kergem LT1-st

Thanks.

A complete stock Mopar RB weighs 670 lbs; a complete aluminum RB weighs 484 lbs. So the engine is 186 lbs lighter than it's iron counterpart; about 40 lbs is out of the heads, about 20 from the water pum & housing and abou the same from the intake. So that leaves about 100 lbs gain because of the blockmaterial. The block is the heaviest part in this engine, next heaviest is the crank.
